Definition aqueous medium containing only that fraction of a product which remains in the aqueous phase once any source of mixing energy has been removed and after a period sufficient for phase separation Reference Improved approaches to ecotoxicity testing of petroleum products, Tsvetnenko Y, Evans L., Marine Pollution Bulletin 2002;45(1-12):148-56.
Comment The product may be present either in true solution or as a stable emulsion. If the dispersed material is removed by centrifugation or filtration, the medium is sometimes referred to as the Water Soluble Fraction (WSF), but this implies that the material is present only in true solution. The term WAF is preferred for those media that may contain part of the oil in an emulsified or dispersed form. WAFs are prepared by stirring a known amount of test substance with a known volume of test medium. The amount of product per unit volume of medium is referred to as the loading rate.
