- Comment The Council Working Party on Combating Fraud considers the French terms 'faux-monnayage' and 'contrefaçon' to be equivalent terms which should both be translated into English as 'counterfeiting'.In the UK Forgery and Counterfeiting Act 1981, 'forgery' is the making of a false instrument, not just currency, which includes falsifying an existing one, while a 'counterfeit' is a fake note or coin which resembles a genuine one, or a genuine note or coin which has been altered.Although 'forgery' is often used as a synonym of 'counterfeiting', in some cases they refer to two different concepts, i.e. 'the fraudulent making of' (counterfeiting) and 'the altering or falsification of' (forgery).
