Definition Tailings are the waste solids that remain after the mineral processing of ore carried out by a number of techniques. Conventional mineral processing generates tailings, which either leave the mineral processing plant in the form of a slurry consisting of 15-60% solids or as coarse tailings (more or less dry). Coarse and fine tailings can be used to backfill mines. Most mine tailings are deposited in on-site impoundments, such as tailing ponds or heaps. Reference COM(2003) 319 final, p. 7
Reference COM/2003/0319 final

Actinide http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Actinide [16.11.2011]
Comment The actinide series derives its name from the group 3 element actinium. All actinides are radioactive and release energy upon radioactive decay; naturally occurring uranium and thorium, and synthetically produced plutonium are the most abundant actinides on Earth. These are used in nuclear reactors and nuclear weapons. Uranium and thorium also have diverse current or historical uses, and americium is used in the ionization chambers of most modern smoke detectors.

Comment Yeasts reproduce by budding and by the formation of sexual spores (in the case of the perfect yeasts) or asexual spores (in the case of the imperfect yeasts). Baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces) ferments carbohydrates to produce alcohol and carbon dioxide and is important in brewing and breadmaking. Some yeasts are a commercial source of proteins and of vitamins of the B complex. Yeasts that cause disease in humans include Candida, Cryptococcus, and Malassezia.Reference: "yeast". Comment PLS belongs to a group of disorders known as motor neuron diseases / is a form of motor neurone disease (see IATE:2250577 ).Onset of PLS usually occurs after age 50. Symptoms may include difficulty with balance; weakness and stiffness in the legs; and clumsiness. Other symptoms may include spasticity (sudden, involuntary muscle spasms) in the hands, feet, or legs; foot dragging; and speech problems due to involvement of the facial muscles. The disorder usually begins in the legs, but it may also start in the tongue or the hands. The disease - which scientists believe is not hereditary - progresses gradually over a number of years, or even decades. In PLS, there is no evidence of the degeneration of spinal motor neurons or muscle wasting (amyotrophy) that occurs in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS - see IATE:1685830 ), which it resembles. Diagnosis of PLS is often delayed because it is mistaken for ALS.
Comment Can also refer more generally to any of the formal statements presented by the parties alternately in an action at law. Examples of pleadings are complaints, petitions, counter-claims and answers.Black's Law Dictionary 1270 (9th ed. 2009) & Dictionary of Modern Legal Usage (Garner)
