    adsorption | sorption
    en
Definition physical or chemical bonding of molecules of gas, liquid or a dissolved substance to the external surface of a solid or the internal surface, if the material is porous, in a very thin layer Reference ALL - Allaby, M., Macmillan Dictionary of the Environment - Third Edition, The Macmillan Press Ltd., London 1990.
Comment A high adsorption indicates a higher accumulation of molecules on the soil compared to the water phase. The difference between adsorption and absorption [ IATE:1472588 ] is that adsorption is the attraction between the outer surface of a solid particle and a contaminant, whereas absorption is the uptake of the contaminant into the physical structure of the solid

distribution coefficient | Kd | pesticide soil sorption coefficient | soil/water adsorption coefficient
    en
Definition the "soil-water" partitioning coefficient and is the ratio of a chemical's sorbed concentration (mg/kg) to the dissolved concentration (mg/L) at equilibrium Reference US EPA. Soil/Water Adsorption Coefficient (Kd) http://www.epa.gov/oecaagct/ag101/pestkd.html [20.1.2011]
Comment The greater the Kd value, the less likely a chemical will leach or contribute to runoff. A very high value means it is strongly adsorbed onto soil and organic matter and does not move throughout the soil. Higher is better. Pesticides are less likely to leach or occur as surface runoff when the Kd is greater than 5Kd(L/kg) = Sorbed Concentration (mg/kg) / Dissolved Concentration (mg/L).For organics, Kd may be calculated by multiplying Koc (the soil organic carbon-water partitioning coefficient) by foc (the mass fraction of soil organic carbon content), as illustrated below:Kd = Koc x foc For Koc, see IATE:3530100<>

soil organic carbon sorption coefficient | Koc | soil organic carbon-water partitioning coefficient
    en
Definition the ratio of the mass of a chemical that is adsorbed in the soil per unit mass of organic carbon in the soil per the equilibrium chemical concentration in solution Reference CLARC https://fortress.wa.gov/ Notes on Chemical-Specific Parameters – Physical and Chemical Properties https://fortress.wa.gov/ecy/clarc/FocusSheets/Physical&ChemicalParameters.htm [20.1.2011]
Comment It is the "distribution coefficient" (Kd) [ IATE:3530105 ] normalized to total organic carbon content. KOC values are useful in predicting the mobility of organic soil contaminants; higher KOC values correlate to less mobile organic chemicals while lower KOC values correlate to more mobile organic chemicals.
