    Comment Before the COVID-19 pandemic, antibody response was considered to be a synonym of B-cell response (humoral response). However, the type of antibody response produced by mRNA vaccines is different from that produced by other vaccines. They do not produce the same type of antibodies as natural infection (immune response mediated by T-cells and B-cells), but elicit more antibodies against the spike protein receptor-binding domain (RBD). Thus, in this case, antibody response and B-cell response (humoral response) can be considered to be two different types of immune response.

As opposed to SNT the antibody ELISA is less complicated and is therefore used in routine diagnostics. A number of commercially available test kits permit automatisation and supply results within a few hours. In areas where there is a low seroprevalence and vaccination is not permitted (e.g. Sweden), the antibody ELISA detects PI animals within a herd (the higher the antibody count is in a bulk milk sample the greater is the probability that there is a PI animal in the herd).

    Comment Humoral immunity includes the primary and secondary immune responses to antigen. During the primary immune response, an antigen is encountered by the host for the first time. Virgin B cells need to be activated and proliferate before an effective immune response can be generated. This primary response may be too slow to protect against many pathogens, therefore polyspecific natural antibodies with low affinity and the innate immune system may be utilized to limit microbial replication at the onset of infection.
