anti-detonant fluid | antidetonation injection fluid | ADI fluid
    en
Definition fluid, such as water/alcohol mix, that is sprayed into the cylinders of an internal combustion engine or incoming fuel-air mixture to cool the combustion chambers of the engine, allowing for greater compression ratios and largely eliminating the problem of engine knocking (detonation) Reference COM-EN, based on: Wikipedia > Water injection (engines). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_injection_(engines) [5.8.2011]
Comment The concept should not be confused with 'anti-knock additive' [ IATE:126816 ] which is simply added to the fuel to prevent pre-ignition. ADI fluid requires a separate injection system for its delivery to the combustion chamber/fuel-air mixture.
