ring rot of potato | potato ring rot
    en
Definition plant disease caused by Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. sepedonicus [ IATE:3547731 ] which cause plants to wilt but symptoms are much more likely to be observed in tubers Reference UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs > Food and Environment Research Agency (FERA) > Plants Bees & Seeds > Publications > Plant pest and disease factsheets > Notifiable Diseases > Bacteria > Ring rot of potato, http://www.fera.defra.gov.uk/plants/publications/documents/factsheets/ringrot.pdf [15.2.2013]
Comment Tuber symptoms can been seen when tubers are cut across the heel end (where the tuber was attached to the stolon). In the early stages the tissues around the vascular ring appear glassy and water soaked. As infection progresses the vascular ring becomes discoloured and a soft cheese-like rot develops around the vascular ring (hence the name “ring” rot). If a cut tuber is squeezed, a cheese-like ooze emerges. External symptoms are not common but in severe cases the skin of the potato may crack and ooze can emerge from the heel end and eyes, causing soil to adhere.

Comment Taxonomic position: Nematoda: Tylenchida: Heteroderidae Notes on taxonomy and nomenclature: In 1973, a new species of potato cyst nematode (Heterodera pallida) was described (Stone, 1973a). To accommodate the potato cyst nematodes and related species having round cysts, Skarbilovich (1959) erected the subgenus Globodera which was later elevated to generic status by Behrens (1975) (see also Mulvey & Stone, 1976).
