    Comment L'étude du spectre thermique du corps noir a conduit Max Planck à introduire la notion de quanta, qui désigne la quantité d'énergie mise en jeu dans une interaction entre le rayonnement et la matière. À cette quantité, Albert Einstein a associé une particule, le photon : c'est le double aspect du rayonnement, à la fois onde et corpuscule. Cette particule véhicule une quantité d'énergie E = hν, où h est la constante de Planck (h = 6,626 075 × 10—34 J.s) et ν la fréquence de l'onde. La puissance transportée par la radiation correspond au nombre de photons d'énergie E mis en jeu par seconde. La plage de fréquence des radiations électromagnétiques est extrêmement large : de 105 à 1020 Hz, elle couvre plus de 50 octaves.
