Une démarche de management environnemental peut être poussée à différents stades, jusqu'à la reconnaissance éventuelle d'un système de management environnemental (S.M.E.). Deux référentiels décrivant les exigences applicables aux S.M.E. existent: les normes ISO 14000 et le règlement communautaire EMAS (Environmental Management and Audit System) également dénommé Ecoaudit. L'EMAS suppose notamment l'élaboration et la diffusion au public d'une déclaration environnementale présentant les impacts sur l'environnement et les actions planifiées pour les prévenir.
