Since the beginning of 2008, the Gaois research group has been providing Irish-language material for the European Union’s terminology database iate.europa.eu in a project funded by the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. IATE consists of 1.5 million entries in the 24 official languages of the EU. Gaois is responsible for increasing the number of entries that contain Irish-language terms and for improving the quality of existing material (through the provision of definitions, references and usage examples). This work is done in close collaboration with the Irish units in the EU institutions and with the Terminology Committee, Foras na Gaeilge. Since 2008, Fiontar & Scoil na Gaeilge has worked on c.102,000 IATE entries.
All Irish terms included in IATE are added periodically to the terminology database on gaois.ie along with the equivalent data for French, German and English. The material found in this collection is a static copy of the IATE data at a particular point in time and cannot be edited or updated by the Gaois team.
