- Comment Curing is the overarching term for processing steps (e.g. yellowing, drying, fermentation) that transform the fresh tobacco leaf into something that can be smoked, by means of physical and chemical changes in the leaf that are regulated to develop the desired properties. The tobacco leaves may be air-cured, fire-cured, flue-cured or sun-cured and are usually hung in barns, also known as kiln houses.
