    Definition A global treaty to protect human health and the environment from chemicals that remain intact in the environment for long periods, become widely distributed geographically and accumulate in the fatty tissue of humans and wildlife. The Convention requires Parties to take measures to eliminate or reduce the release of POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants) into the environment.     Definition Cette convention constitue un cadre, fondé sur le principe de précaution, qui vise à garantir l’élimination de la production, de l’utilisation, de l’importation et de l’exportation des douze premiers polluants organiques persistants prioritaires, ainsi que leur manutention, leur évacuation et leur élimination en toute sécurité ou la réduction des rejets résultant d’une production non intentionnelle de certains polluants organiques persistants. En outre, la convention fixe les règles relatives à l’introduction dans la convention d’une liste de polluants organiques persistants supplémentaires.     Comment La Convention de Stockholm sur les polluants organiques persistants a été adoptée le 22 mai 2001, sous l’égide du programme des Nations unies pour l’environnement. Elle est entrée en vigueur en 2004.
