    Comment "L'endiguement et l'atténuation sont deux concepts qui ont été explorés lors des grippes pandémiques, comme H5N1: le premier, qui consiste à stopper la transmission d'un agent infectieux, peut fonctionner si l'on met en place des mesures de contrôle dès que le virus est détecté et si l'on a un bon système de surveillance pour détecter les personnes infectées. Mais dès lors que la barrière des quelques centaines, voire des quelques milliers de cas, est dépassée, les autorités sanitaires ne peuvent plus suivre.Dans ce cas, lorsque la pandémie est déclarée ou sur le point de l'être, c'est le concept d'atténuation qui prend la relève: il ne s'agit plus d'éliminer l'épidémie - c'est désormais impossible - mais de réduire son impact négatif au maximum. S'il n'y a pas de vaccin ou d'outils pharmaceutiques - c'est le cas pour le SARS-CoV-2 -, les mesures d'atténuation sont les seuls outils disponibles pour atténuer l'incidence du virus (diminution des contacts humains au maximum, mise en place de mesures d'hygiènes, du télétravail, fermeture des écoles)."
