The Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal (the ‘Convention’) entered into force in 1992 and was concluded by the Union by means of Council Decision 93/98/EEC.

With regard to proposals to amend Annex IV and certain entries in Annexes II and IX to the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal (the ‘Convention’) as well as proposals to amend Annexes II, VIII and IX to the Convention in respect of waste electrical and electronic equipment at the fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties, the Union shall pursue the following objectives:

I gcomhréir le Coinbhinsiún na Náisiún Aontaithe maidir le Dlí na Farraige an 10 Nollaig 1982 (UNCLOS), an Coinbhinsiún um Chosc ar Mhuir-Thruailliú trí Fhuíoll agus Ábhar Eile a Dhumpáil an 29 Nollaig 1972 (“Coinbhinsiún Londan”) agus Prótacal 1996 (“Prótacal Londan”), Iarscríbhinn V a ghabhann le Coinbhinsiún Idirnáisiúnta um Thruailliú ó Longa a Chosc 1973 (MARPOL), arna leasú le Prótacal 1978 a bhaineann leis, agus Coinbhinsiún Basel maidir le rialú gluaiseachtaí trasteorann dramhaíolacha guaiseacha agus a ndiúscairt an 22 Márta 1989 agus le reachtaíocht dramhaíola an Aontais, eadhon Treoir 2008/98/CE agus Treoir 2000/59/CE ó Pharlaimint na hEorpa agus ón gComhairle, ceanglaítear ar na Ballstáit bainistiú dramhaíola fónta a áirithiú chun an bruscar muirí ó fhoinsí mara agus talaimh araon a chosc agus a laghdú.
In accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982 (UNCLOS), the Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution by Dumping of Wastes and Other Matter of 29 December 1972 (‘London Convention’) and its 1996 Protocol (‘London Protocol’), Annex V to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships 1973 (MARPOL), as modified by the Protocol of 1978 relating thereto, and the Basel Convention on the control of transboundary movements of hazardous wastes and their disposal of 22 March 1989 and with Union waste legislation, namely Directive 2008/98/EC and Directive 2000/59/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council, Member States are required to ensure environmentally sound waste management to prevent and reduce marine litter from both sea and land sources.
