    co2 eq. | CO2-equivalent | CO2e | CO2-eq | carbon dioxide equivalent | CO2 equivalent
    en
Definition metric measure used to compare the emissions from various greenhouse gases on the basis of their global-warming potential, by converting amounts of other gases to the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide with the same global warming potential Reference European Commission > Eurostat > Statistics Explained > Glossary > Carbon dioxide equivalent (12.7.2021)
Comment There are six main greenhouse gases which cause climate change and are limited by the Kyoto protocol. Each gas has a different global warming potential. For simplicity of reporting, the mass of each gas emitted is commonly translated into a carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) amount so that the total impact from all sources can be summed to one figure.(See also: IATE:3518035 tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent.)
