    Nóta - The different types of PCB chemicals are known as congeners, which are compounds that are distinguished by the number of chlorine atoms and their location on the biphenyl structure. Of the 210 different dioxin compounds, only 17 are of toxicological concern. The most widely studied and most toxic form of dioxin is 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin, abbreviated as 2,3,7,8- TCDD ( IATE:133291 ). It is measured in parts per trillion (ppt). A major accident occurred in Seveso (Italy) in 1976, a consequence of which was the adoption by Member States of EC Directive 82/501 (The Seveso Directive) for the control of major industrial hazards.
