- Nóta Le gaz naturel liquéfié est presque du méthane pur. Les autres composants du gaz naturel sont donc séparés lors de l'opération de refroidissement. Le dioxyde de carbone doit être extrait au préalable, il endommagerait les unités de liquéfaction en s'y solidifiant. On le considère généralement comme un déchet. Les hydrocarbures plus lourds que le méthane sont récupérés, et vendus comme matière première pétrochimique ou comme carburant (gaz de pétrole liquéfié), la plupart des terminaux d'exportation de GNL produisent aussi du GPL. L'hélium est un coproduit dont la valeur commerciale peut être importante.
