Ces cinq États constituent le cadre géographique principal du G5 Sahel. La nouvelle stratégie, de 2021, inscrit toutefois l'action de l’UE dans le cadre plus large des enjeux régionaux et transfrontaliers et des liens qui existent en particulier entre le Sahel, les États côtiers de l'Afrique de l'Ouest, le bassin du Lac Tchad et l'Afrique du Nord.Ne pas confondre avec la stratégie pour le développement et la sécurité des pays du G5 Sahel, de 2016 (voir ici, point 3), ni avec la stratégie intégrée des Nations unies pour le Sahel (ici, point 6)
