    Definition Organisme subsidiaire et une des commissions économiques régionales de l'Organisation des Nations unies (ONU). Initialement prévue à titre expérimental, la ECE devient, en 1951, un organe permanent des Nations unies. Elle se compose de représentants des dix-sept pays européens membres de l'ONU (Belgique, Biélorussie, Danemark, France, Grèce, Islande, Luxembourg, Norvège, Pays-Bas, Pologne, Royaume-Uni, Suède, Tchécoslovaquie, Turquie, Ukraine, URSS et Yougoslavie) ainsi que des États-Unis. La Commission crée divers comités spécialisés, mène des études, élabore des statistiques, offre une expertise et adresse des recommandations à ses États membres. Elle facilite la solution de problèmes économiques, favorise les échanges commerciaux et l'amélioration des problèmes de transport intraeuropéens. L'ECE soutient également l'adoption de conventions ou d'accords relatifs à la circulation et à la signalisation routières, aux formalités douanières, à l'arbitrage commercial ou à l'urbanisme.
