    Comment Un vecteur est une construction utilisée pour faire pénétrer un gène d'intérêt dans une cellule. Il peut s'agir, par exemple, d'un virus (après élimination de son pouvoir pathogène) ou d'un plasmide. Il existe deux catégories de vecteurs permettant de transférer un gène étranger (transgène): les vecteurs viraux et les vecteurs non viraux. La méthode des vecteurs viraux consiste tout simplement à utiliser les virus, capables de franchir les barrières de protection mises en place par le corps en cas d’introduction d’un organisme étranger dans celui-ci. Pour pouvoir se reproduire dans l’organisme, les virus détournent l’activité de la cellule dans laquelle ils se logent : c’est la transduction. Les cellules infectées par le virus sont alors transduites. La méthode des vecteurs non viraux est, elle, purement chimique et vise à utiliser directement la molécule d’ADN sans recourir aux virus. Bien que les vecteurs non viraux soient plus faciles à produire, à manipuler, à stocker et soient caractérisables comme des produits pharmaceutiques normaux, leur capacité à transférer une information est beaucoup moins importante que celle des virus.
