    Definition "L’ECTS a été mis en place en 1989 dans le cadre du programme Erasmus. Il fait désormais partie du programme Socrates. L’ECTS est le seul système de crédits qui ait été expérimenté et utilisé avec succès en Europe. Mis en œuvre à l’origine pour assurer le transfert de crédits, l’ECTS a permis de faciliter la reconnaissance académique des périodes d’études réalisées à l’étranger, et de développer qualitativement la mobilité des étudiants en Europe. Depuis peu, l’ECTS évolue vers un système d’accumulation de crédits mis en œuvre au plan institutionnel, régional, national et européen.
