    en
Definition substance that reacts with the products of a specific immune response Reference Gene Mayer, University of South Carolina, School of Medicine. Microbiology and Immunology On-line, Immunology - Chapter 3: Antigens (24.4.2020)
Comment Not to be confused with immunogen. That portion of an antigen that combines with the products of a specific immune response is called epitope or antigenic determinant. The terms antigen and immunogen are often used interchangeably, and for most purposes, the difference is irrelevant. But to be precise, they describe two types of interactions between a molecule and the immune system. An immunogen refers to a molecule that is capable of eliciting an immune response by an organism’s immune system, whereas an antigen refers to a molecule that is capable of binding to the product of that immune response. So, an immunogen is necessarily an antigen, but an antigen may not necessarily be an immunogen.

idiotypic antigen | idiotypic antigenic determinant | idiotope
    en
Definition antigenic determinant (epitope) [ IATE:1073785 ] which is unique to a single clone of cells and is made up of amino acids within the variable (V) region of an antibody [ IATE:1073776 ] or T-cell receptor [ IATE:1221832 ] that reacts with an anti-idiotype antibody [ IATE:1073784 ] Reference IUPAC Glossary of Terms used in Immunotoxicology http://old.iupac.org/reports/provisional/abstract11/templeton_prs.pdf [20.9.2011]
Comment The idiotope forms part of the antigen [ IATE:1503455 ] binding site. Any single immunoglobulin [ IATE:1224959 ] may have more than one idiotope. Idiotopes are also associated with the antigen binding sites of T-cell receptors [ IATE:1221832 ] . They are the epitopes [ IATE:1073785 ] to which an anti-idiotype antibody [ IATE:1073784 ] or T-cell [ IATE:1431862 ] binds. The anti-idiotopic region of the anti-idiotype antibody [ IATE:1073784 ] may mimic the antigenic determinant (epitope) [ IATE:1073785 ] binding characteristics of the antigen [ IATE:1503455 ] without sharing any sequence homology.

Definition any of the cell-surface antigen-presenting proteins encoded by the HLA system (group of genes residing on chromosome 6), the major part of which are essential elements for immune function Reference COM-EN, based on:Wikipedia. Human leukocyte antigen http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_leukocyte_antigen#In_graft_rejection [17.10.2011]
Comment They play a major role in graft rejection, as any cell displaying some other HLA type is "non-self" and is an invader, resulting in the rejection of the tissue bearing those cells. The HLA genes are the human versions of the MHC [ IATE:1073795 ] genes that are found in most vertebrates
