    Nóta La composition du milieu a été développée par Rappaport suite à l’observation faite de la plus grande résistance des Salmonella aux milieux hypertoniques que la plupart des autres entérobactéries. Dans ses expérimentations, Rappaport démontra que le chlorure de magnésium s’avérait être le plus efficace de tous les sels testés. Par addition de vert malachite, il augmenta la sélectivité du milieu. Vassiliadis a par ailleurs montré que pour récupérer un grand nombre de Salmonella, il fallait réduire la teneur en vert malachite et porter l’incubation de 37 à 43°C. Par la suite, Peterz et al. ont déterminé les incidences de la température d'incubation et de la teneur en chlorure de magnésium sur le pouvoir récupérateur du milieu. Van Schothorst et Renaud ont modifié le bouillon de Rappaport-Vassiliadis en remplaçant la peptone de caséine par la peptone de soja et en incorporant au milieu de l’hydrogénophosphate de potassium pour le tamponner, afin de lui conférer une plus grande stabilité dans le temps.

    Nóta Guth, confirmant les premières observations de Handel et Thodorascu, a employé le sélénite de sodium comme agent sélectif dans un bouillon d’enrichissement pour Salmonella Typhi, après avoir mis en évidence la toxicité de cette substance vis-à-vis d’Escherichia coli.Leifson, reprenant les travaux de Guth, a développé la formule d’un bouillon au sélénite pour l’enrichissement sélectif des Salmonella Typhi et Paratyphi à partir de prélèvements pathologiques, en montrant que pendant les douze premières heures d’incubation, le nombre de coliformes diminuait tandis que, parallèlement, le nombre de bacilles typhiques augmentait rapidement. Le bouillon sélénite-cystine constitue une modification de la formule originale de Leifson.Cette formulation a été proposée par la Food and Drug Administration pour une utilisation spécialement destinée à la détection des Salmonella dans les produits alimentaires. La composition est conforme à la Pharmacopée américaine.
