Definition any substance belonging to a group of polychlorinated aromatic compounds with similar structures, chemical and physical properties Reference COM-EN, based on:European Commission > DG Health and Consumers > Overview > Food and Feed Safety > Fact Sheet on dioxin in feed and food, 20 July 2001 http://ec.europa.eu/dgs/health_consumer/library/press/press170_en.pdf [15.5.2008]
Comment Dioxin is a colourless, odourless organic compound containing carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and chlorine. The term dioxin refers to a broad family of chemicals. Of the 210 different dioxin compounds, only 17 are of toxicological concern. The most widely studied and most toxic form of dioxin is 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin, abbreviated as 2,3,7,8- TCDD ( IATE:133291 ). It is measured in parts per trillion (ppt). A major accident occurred in Seveso (Italy) in 1976, a consequence of which was the adoption by Member States of EC Directive 82/501 (The Seveso Directive) for the control of major industrial hazards.
