    Comment In practice, the definition varies between countries, e.g. from gleaning or one-man canoes in poor developing countries, to trawlers, seiners, or long-liners longer than 20m in developed countries. Artisanal fisheries can be subsistence or commercial fisheries, providing for local consumption or export. The FAO Glossary tends to equate 'artisanal' with 'small-scale'. From a technological point of view, however, these are connected but have somewhat different concepts related, on the one hand, to the size of the fishing unit (the scale) and, on the other hand, to the relative level of technology (or 'artisanality') expressed as the capital investment / man-on-board.     Comment En fonction des pays, des contextes et des sources, les termes "pêche artisanale" et "pêche à petite échelle" peuvent recouvrir de nombreuses réalités. Ils sont tantôt utilisés comme synonymes, tantôt pas. La plupart du temps, il s'agit en fait d'une différence de perspective, selon que l'on accentue le mode de pêche (artisanale), ou la taille du bateau ou l'échelle de pêcherie (à petite échelle).Il est à noter que la pêche commerciale peut également être à petite échelle.En anglais, on trouve aussi le terme fishery, qui ne s'entend pas dans ce cas comme une pêcherie (activité de pêche sur un stock ou un groupe de stocks pêché par les mêmes engins de pêche ou le même type d'engins de pêche), mais bien comme un synonyme de pêche (IATE:796595 ; activité permettant de capturer des espèces aquatiques).
