    en
Definition body of water separated from larger bodies of water by a natural barrier, which, depending on the authority in question, may include freshwater bodies or require a degree of salinity to be classified as a lagoon Reference COUNCIL-EN based on National Ocean Service > Ocean Facts What is a lagoon? and on Wikipedia > Lagoon (29.4.2021)
Comment There are two types of lagoons: atoll and coastal. Atoll lagoons form when an island completely subsides beneath the water, leaving a ring of coral that continues to grow upwards. At the center of the ring is a body of water that is often deep. The combination of coral growth and water creates a lagoon. It may take as long as 300,000 years for an atoll formation to occur. Coastal lagoons form along gently sloping coasts. They are generally shallower than atoll lagoons and tend to be separated from the ocean by an island, reef, or sand bank. Most of the time, coastal lagoons are connected to the ocean by an inlet.

    earth-banked lagoon | earth-banked slurry store | lagoon
    en
Definition large rectangular or square structure with sloping earth bank walls and a large surface area to depth ratio used to store slurry for extended periods of time Reference COM-Terminology Coordination, based on:European Commission. Joint Research Centre. Best Available Techniques (BAT) Reference Document for the Intensive Rearing of Poultry or Pigs, http://eippcb.jrc.ec.europa.eu/reference/BREF/IRPP/JRC107189_IRPP_Bref_2017_published.pdf [15.6.2018]
Comment Their design varies from simple ponds without any provisions to relatively well monitored storage facilities with water-impermeable lining such as clay or thick plastic sheets (e.g. polythene or butyl rubber) on the bottom, protecting the soil underneath. The capacity of a lagoon depends on the slurry generation of the farm and the operational requirements. Slurry can be mixed using pumps or propellers. If the slurry is not transported by pipelines but by a vacuum tank, earth-banked stores can be equipped with an access ramp. The earth-banked store is often fenced off to prevent accidents. The durability of lagoons is considered to be 10–15 years.Reference: European Commission. Joint Research Centre.
