carbon dioxide footprint | carbon footprint | CO2 footprint | greenhouse gas footprint | GHG footprint
    en
Definition measure of the carbon emissions of a particular individual, organisation, community or product, implying the environmental impact of those carbon emissions Reference Council-EN based on:'carbon footprint' (3.4.2020). Oxford English Dictionary
Comment 1. A carbon footprint is a measure of how much someone or something is contributing to the gases that contribute to global climate change. More scientifically, it is the amount of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions attributable to an individual, household, organisation, community or product, generally resulting from their direct or indirect use of energy. Although we talk about 'carbon footprint', it would be more accurate to talk about 'carbon dioxide footprint'. A carbon footprint is normally calculated in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) but occasionally footprints are calculated in tonnes of carbon equivalent (tC). Carbon footprints may also include other gases that contribute to global climate change - the so-called 'greenhouse gases' (GHGs). The most common of these is methane (CH4), but they also include nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons and sulphur hexafluoride (SF6). Most are much more powerful contributors to global warming than CO2.2. A person's carbon footprint forms part of their ecological footprint, since the former represents one competing demand for biologically productive space, along with that person's use of other natural resources (e.g. water, soil, timber etc.). Therefore, when a carbon footprint is reported within the context of an ecological footprint, the carbon dioxide emissions are expressed as the amount of productive land area required to sequester those carbon dioxide emissions - that is, it is expressed as global hectares as opposed to tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent.
