Definition right of a consumer to terminate a sales contract in the event that the goods provided by the seller are not of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose or as described, or that the goods are not delivered within a contractually agreed time period, and be entitled to remedies (repair, replacement or refund) Reference Council-EN, based on:- Which? > Consumer rights > Regulations > Consumer Rights Act 2015 (10.11.2020)- Directive 1999/44/EC on certain aspects of the sale of consumer goods and associated guarantees
Comment In order to be entitled to any kind of remedy, a consumer must usually notify the seller of any defects within a set time period (usually two months following its discovery); and even in those countries where there is no such time limit, there is nevertheless a deadline for consumers specifically seeking a full refund (in the UK, for example, this deadline is 30 days from the date the consumer takes ownership of the goods). It should also be noted that, in some countries, consumers may only exercise their right of termination after having first requested that the goods be repaired or replaced, while in others, consumers have free choice between repair, replacement and termination from the start.
