    Comment L’expression générale «système de visualisation des cartes électroniques» englobe l’ensemble des équipements électroniques capables d’afficher la position d’un navire sur une image de carte visualisée sur un écran. On distingue deux catégories de systèmes de visualisation des cartes électroniques. La première est un ECDIS (système de visualisation des cartes électroniques et d’information) pouvant répondre aux prescriptions d’emport des cartes OMI/SOLAS. La seconde est un système de cartes électroniques (ECS : Electronic Chart System), qui peut être utilisé comme aide à la navigation, mais ne répond pas aux prescriptions OMI/SOLAS d’emport des cartes.
