- Nóta Its goal is to advance and share scientific understanding of marine ecosystems and the services they provide and to use this knowledge to generate state-of-the-art advice for meeting conservation, management, and sustainability goals.It is a network of nearly 6 000 scientists from over 700 marine institutes in its 20 member countries and beyond. Over 2 500 scientists participate in its activities annually. Through strategic partnerships its work in the Atlantic Ocean also extends into the Arctic, the Mediterranean Sea, the Black Sea, and the North Pacific Ocean.The 20 member countries are: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russian Federation, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom and the United States of America. Organisations in Australia, Chile, New Zealand, Peru, and South Africa have affiliate status.

- Nóta En 1964, la Convention du Conseil international pour l'exploration de la mer a établi les fondements juridiques du CIEM et lui a conféré un statut international.Le CIEM est la principale source des avis en matière de gestion des environnements marins de l’Atlantique nord-est et des mers adjacentes. Il fédère le travail de 1600 scientifiques venant principalement des 20 pays membres riverains de l’Atlantique nord: Belgique, Canada, Danemark, Estonie, Finlande, France, Allemagne, Islande, Irlande, Lituanie, Lettonie, Pays-Bas, Norvège, Pologne, Portugal, Russie, Espagne, Suède, Royaume-Uni, États-Unis.
