    Nóta Ce type d'accord est un accord exclusif: aucun navire européen ne peut conclure d'accord privé qui lui donnerait des droits de pêche supplémentaires. Les accords de partenariat sont divisés en deux grandes catégories: la première regroupe les 11 accords thoniers bilatéraux, la deuxième, les accords multi-espèces avec le Groenland, la Mauritanie, la Guinée-Bissau, la Guinée et le Maroc. Pour les pays n'appartenant pas à l'UE, il existe aussi, outre les accords de partenariat, des accords dits "accords nordiques" conclus notamment avec la Norvège, l'Islande et les Îles Féroé (gestion conjointe des stocks partagés). Depuis 2013, ces accords comportent deux nouveaux éléments essentiels: l'importance accordée à l'aspect "durable" (d'où le changement d'intitulé) et l'inclusion d'une clause relative au respect des principes démocratiques et des droits de l'homme.
