    Comment Symptoms appear some two years after infection. The first symptoms are an itch that causes the animals to scrape themselves against trees, fences, etc. The following stage involves drowsiness and the staggering gait resulting from paralysis of the legs. The disease is usually fatal six months after the appearance of the first symptoms. It is related to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in humans.

    Comment Identifiée depuis plus de 250 ans, cette maladie est la première encéphalopathie spongiforme transmissible (EST) ou maladie à prion de mammifères à avoir été reconnue.La maladie se transmet principalement de la mère à sa progéniture immédiatement après la naissance, et à d’autres nouveau-nés réceptifs qui sont exposés aux eaux fœtales ou à des tissus provenant d’un animal infecté. Sa fréquence de transmission aux sujets adultes exposés à ces mêmes eaux et tissus est beaucoup plus faible. Elle a une période d'incubation variable, qui, cependant, se mesure habituellement en années.
