- Definition In cryptography, a highly secure optical transmission method used to send secret keys from sender to receiver. QKD systems transmit the keys, which are derived from random numbers, one photon (one bit) at a time in a polarized state. If intercepted by an eavesdropper, that state will change, and an error will be detected at the receiving side. The keys are transmitted on a different line than the data, and although sent at a much slower rate; for example, 1,000 bps, it is fast enough to send the keys and even change the keys one or more times per second.
