- Sainmhíniú diminution in value of a fixed asset due to wear and tear or obsolescence over an accounting period Tagairt "depreciation" A Dictionary of Business and Management. Ed. Jonathan Law. Oxford University Press (OUP), 2009. Oxford Reference Online. OUP. DGT. http://www.oxfordreference.com/views/ENTRY.html?subview=Main&entry=t18.e1870 [30.9.2010]
- Nóta When used to refer to the reduction of the value of assets, depreciation is used for tangible assets [ IATE:1487476 ] only. The same process relating to intangible assets [ IATE:794769 ] is called amortisation [ IATE:2249987 ]. A provision for depreciation can be computed by means of a number of generally accepted techniques, including the straight-line method, the diminishing-balance method, the sum-of-the-digits method, the production-unit method, and the revaluation method. The depreciation reduces the book value of the asset and is charged against income of an organization in the income statement or profit and loss account.
