Ces espèces non ciblées capturées accidentellement sont typiquement des espèces interdites à la pêche ou menacées d'extinction, comme par exemple les cétacés, les tortues, les phoques, les oiseaux de mer, etc. Bien que les textes de l'UE fassent une distinction entre prises "accessoires" et "accidentelles", ces termes sont parfois utilisés comme synonymes et ciblent alors indifféremment une autre espèce de poissons (cf. IATE:783472 ) ou d'autres organismes marins.
