En l'occurrence, il s'agit de nécrose visible, à travers l'épiderme et jusque dans le derme, suite à l'application d'une substance d'essai pendant une durée allant jusqu'à quatre heures. Les réactions corrosives se traduisent généralement par des ulcères, des saignements, des croûtes sanguinolentes et, à la fin de la période d'observation, soit à 14 jours, par une décoloration due au blanchissement de la peau, des zones complètes d'alopécie, et des cicatrices.
