    Comment Founded in Geneva in 1863 and formally recognised in the Geneva Conventions and by the International Conferences of the Red Cross, it is an independent, neutral organisation ensuring humanitarian protection and assistance for victims of war and armed violence. It is one of the components of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement [ IATE:886807 ]. It has a permanent mandate under international law to take impartial action for prisoners, the wounded and sick, and civilians affected by conflict.
