Definition vaccine, administered orally and in three or more spread doses in order to generate adequate levels of seroconversion [ IATE:1431879 ], that consists of a mixture of live attenuated poliovirus strains [ IATE:1141473 ] of each of the three serotypes [ IATE:1542840 ], selected by their ability to mimic the immune response following infection with wild polioviruses, but with a significantly reduced incidence [ IATE:1569465 ] of spreading to the central nervous system Reference COM-Terminology Coordination, based on: WHO. 'Oral polio vaccine (OPV)' (16.9.2019)
Comment 1) Oral polio vaccine was first introduced in 1961 and consists of a mixture of the three live attenuated poliovirus serotypes (Sabin types 1, 2 and 3), selected for their lower neurovirulence and reduced transmissibility. 2) Sabin viruses can spread in populations where the coverage of OPV is low and they can acquire the neurovirulence and transmissibility characteristics of wild polioviruses (WPV) [ IATE:1685441 ].
