en DNA cloning | molecular cloning | gene cloning
SAINMHÍNIÚ the insertion of recombinant DNA molecules from prokaryotic and/or eukaryotic sources into a replicating vehicle, such as a plasmid or virus vector, and the introduction of the resultant hybrid molecules into recipient cells without altering the viability of those cells TAGAIRT U.S. National Library of Medicine Home > Library Catalogs and Services > Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) > Online searching > 'molecular cloning' http://www.nlm.nih.gov/cgi/mesh/2010/MB_cgi [20.10.2010]
NÓTA In DNA cloning, a DNA fragment that contains a gene of interest is inserted into the purified DNA genome of a self-replicating genetic element - generally a virus or a plasmid. A DNA fragment containing a human gene, for example, can be joined in a test tube to the chromosome of a bacterial virus, and the new recombinant DNA molecule can then be introduced into a bacterial cell. Starting with only one such recombinant DNA molecule that infects a single cell, the normal replication mechanisms of the virus can produce more than 1012 identical virus DNA molecules in less than a day, thereby amplifying the amount of the inserted human DNA fragment by the same factor. A virus or plasmid used in this way is known as a cloning vector, and the DNA propagated by insertion into it is said to have been cloned
Ref: WWW.Molecular-Plant-Biotechnology.info DNA Cloning http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/bookshelf/br.fcgi?book=cell∂=A1408 [20.10.2010]

SAINMHÍNIÚ system consisting of a gene, normally encoded by DNA, and the molecular machinery required to transcribe the DNA into mRNA and translate the mRNA into protein using the reagents provided, specifically designed for the production of a gene product of choice - normally a protein although may also be RNA, such as tRNA or a ribozyme TAGAIRT Gene Expression System, http://www.news-medical.net/health/Gene-Expression-System.aspx [11.5.2012]
NÓTA In the broadest sense this includes every living cell but the term is more normally used to refer to expression as a laboratory tool.
An expression system is therefore often artificial in some manner. Expression systems are, however, a fundamentally natural process.
Viruses are an excellent example where they replicate by using the host cell as an expression system for the viral proteins and genome.
