    Definition 1) prise d'échantillons, d'habitude à intervalles de temps réguliers; la technique d'échantillonnage consiste à prendre des échantillons d'informations à des intervalles prédéfinis. Ces échantillons vont servir d'étalon pour l'analyse des informations en vue de leur codage/décodage. Cette nouvelle technique permet de garantir une meilleure qualité de l'information acheminée. Le système MIC (modulation par impulsions et codage) associe à des échantillons d'information analogiques un code de huit bits, ce qui permet la constitution d'une bibliothèque de 256 échantillons et de leur représentation codée. L'information initiale, de type analogique, est échantillonnée. L'échantillon obtenu est codé en vue de sa transmission.
