Technology Readiness Level | TRL | Technological Readiness Level
    en
Definition point on a scale (TRL 1 and higher) used to measure the progress or maturity level of a technology based on its performance, testing and evaluation in relevant environments Reference "Council-Terminology Coordination, based on: European Space Agency > Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) (20.4.2023)"
Comment "The TRL system was originally developed by NASA for its space applications, ranging from TRL 1 (basic principles observed and reported) to TRL 9 (actual system ""flight proven"" through successful mission operations) (20.4.2023). Other organisations have since adopted the framework to assess the readiness of technologies for use in practical applications, adapting the actual scale depending on their specific needs and context. For example:- the European Space Agency uses a very similar scale of 1 to 9 (20.4.2023), - in 2014, the concept was employed for the first time outside the space sector in the Horizon 2020 programme – again based on nine levels, reformulated in broader terms to suit other sectors of technology (20.4.2023);- for clean energy technologies, the International Energy Agency uses an expanded scale (TRL 1 to TRL 11) to account for additional integration, scaling and development efforts beyond TRL 9. For explanation, see IEA> Innovation needs in the Sustainable Development Scenario (20.4.2023) (go to section ""Assessing technology readiness: The ETP Clean Energy Technology Guide""); for a graphical overview of TRL status of particular technologies, see IEA > Clean Energy Technology Guide (20.4.2023)). This expanded scale is also used in the Commission proposal for a Regulation on establishing a framework of measures for strengthening Europe’s net-zero technology products manufacturing ecosystem (Net Zero Industry Act) (52023PC0161)."
