On 30 June 2011, the Authority issued a scientific opinion on the substantiation of a health claim related to monacolin K from red yeast rice and maintenance of normal blood LDL-cholesterol concentrations.

The Authority concluded that a cause and effect relationship has been established between the consumption of monacolin K from red yeast rice and maintenance of normal blood LDL-cholesterol concentrations at the level of 10 mg daily dose.

On 12 July 2013, the Authority issued a scientific opinion establishing a cause and effect relationship between the consumption of a product containing 2 mg of monacolin K from red yeast rice in combination with other ingredients, and the reduction of blood LDL-cholesterol concentrations.

Following an application from Laboratoire Lescuyer (‘the applicant’), submitted pursuant to Article 14(1), point (a), of Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 and including a request for the protection of proprietary data, the Authority was required to deliver an opinion on the scientific substantiation of a health claim related to the combination of artichoke leaf dry extract standardised in caffeoylquinic acids, monacolin K in red yeast rice, sugar-cane derived policosanols, procyanidolic oligomers from French maritime pine bark, garlic dry extract standardised in allicin, d-α-tocopheryl hydrogen succinate, riboflavin and inositol hexanicotinate (contained in applicant’s product Limicol®) and the reduction of blood LDL-cholesterol concentrations.

In the case of Juniperus plants, the plants of the genera Chaenomeles Lindl., Crataegus L., Cydonia Mill., Juniperus L., Malus Mill., Photinia Ldl. and Pyrus L., which have been grown in the two last years prior to import in the authorised nurseries mentioned in point 3 and in their immediate vicinity, shall have been officially inspected at least six times a year at appropriate intervals for the presence of the pests of concern for the respective plants.
