    ( b ) The powers and duties conferred or imposed on a constable shall be exercised and performed by the chief officer of police, and accordingly for references to a constable in the said provisions, there shall be substituted references to the chief officer of police and for the reference to a Peace Commissioner in sub-section (7) of Section one hundred and seventy-two there shall be substituted a reference to a Court of Summary Jurisdiction, but a chief officer of police in selecting the persons required to provide billets, and in determining the number of officers and soldiers to be billeted on any person shall, so far as practicable have regard to the convenience of the several occupiers;

    Where the Court makes an order in any case of summary jurisdiction (including an order to "strike out" for want of jurisdiction) it shall have power to order any party to the proceedings other than the Director of Public Prosecutions, or a member of the Garda Síochána acting in discharge of his or her duties as a police officer, to pay to the other party such costs and witnesses' expenses as it shall think fit to award.

    (9) Where a person surrenders himself to a constable in Saorstát Eireann as being a deserter or absentee without leave, the officer of police in charge of the police station to which he is brought, shall forthwith inquire into the case, and if it appears that that person is a deserter or absentee without leave, he may cause him to be delivered into military custody without bringing him before a Court of Summary Jurisdiction under this Section, and in such case shall send to the Minister, or as he may direct, a certificate signed by himself as to the fact, date and place of such surrender.

    (6) If it appears to a Justice of the District Court that any sign such as is referred to in this section is erected or retained on land adjoining any road contrary to any regulation made under this section, he may on the application of any police officer or of any officer of the council to whom the maintenance of such road is entrusted by this Act, order the removal of such sign, and, if he thinks it advisable, by such order authorise such officer to enter on such land for the purpose of removing such sign.

    —(1) Paragraph (c) of section 9 of the Dogs Act, 1906 is hereby repealed and in lieu thereof it is hereby enacted that the expenses incurred by the Gárda Síochána under section 3 of that Act shall be paid to the chief officer of police within the meaning of that Act as amended and adapted by any subsequent enactment out of moneys provided by the Oireachtas and any money received by the Gárda Síochána, under the said section 3 shall be paid into the Exchequer in such manner as the Minister for Finance shall direct.

    Building on the current Prüm Decision, which provides a framework for Member States to deploy law enforcement officers for joint operations such as joint patrols, the Commission and the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union sent a joint letter to all Member States to identify needs, and requesting deployment of police officers, in order to launch joint patrols in the EU frontline Member States most affected by mass border crossings arising from the war.
