breakaway cable | breakaway brake cable
    en
Definition cable (or chain) fitted between a braked trailer and towing vehicle which operates the trailer brakes in the event of separation of the primary coupling; the cable applies the trailer brakes and "breaks away", allowing a controlled separation of the vehicle and trailer Reference SMMT Guide on Trailer Maintenance > Trailer Breakaway Cable http://www.autow.co.uk/smmt/trailer_maintenance/breakaway_cable.aspx [13.01.09]
Comment Usually found on caravans. This is a thin steel cable which links the caravan handbrake to the tow bar. In the event of the caravan becoming detached for the car, this cable will operate the caravan handbrake before the cable breaks, thus bringing the caravan to a rapid halt. Both the fitment and use of this device is a legal requirement on modern braked trailers. The Caravan Club>Glossary of caravanning terms http://www.caravanclub.co.uk/msib21/Templates/WUPAuthoring/Page%20Templates/Standard%20Text%203%20Columns.aspx?NRMODE=Published&NRORIGINALURL=%2fPractical%2badvice%2fGeneral%2badvice%2fGlossary%2bof%2bcaravanning%2bterms%2f&NRNODEGUID=%7b2299EFA5-E501-4EFE-8A02-8A84AD2EDD60%7d&NRCACHEHINT=NoModifyGuest#B [13.01.09]
