    Comment Selon la valeur du taux de reproduction de base, ou bien R0 –«R zéro»–, les instituts de veille sanitaire pourront savoir si une maladie est susceptible de se propager et de provoquer une épidémie:- si R0<1, une personne infectée en contaminera une autre au plus (peu de chance d’avoir une épidémie);- si R0=1, une personne infectée en contaminera une autre (le nombre de cas augmentera de manière régulière sans causer d’épidémie);- si R0>1, une personne infectée contaminera plus d’une nouvelle personne (la maladie va se propager et pourra devenir épidémique). Le R0 se calcule sur la base de 3 facteurs: la transmissibilité, le nombre de contacts sociaux et la durée de la période contagieuse.Toutefois, le R0 reste un calcul théorique qui connaît ses limites: il représente une estimation de la contagiosité qui est fonction du comportement humain et des caractéristiques biologiques des agents pathogènes, et est presque toujours estimé rétrospectivement à partir de données séro-épidémiologiques ou en utilisant des modèles théoriques.
