- Comment The ecu was used as a standard monetary unit of measurement of the market value/cost of goods, services, or assets and was composed of a basket of European Community currencies. A private market also developed for the ecu, allowing its use in monetary transactions. It was replaced by the euro at a ratio of 1:1 on 1 January 1999. [Reference: as above]
