Comment Not all the α2-agonists are sedatives, i.e. brimonidine which is used to treat open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.α2-Adrenergic agonists produce clinical effects after binding to α2-adrenergic receptors, of which there are three subtypes (α2A, α2B, and α2C). These receptor subtypes are distributed ubiquitously, and each may be uniquely responsible for some, but not all, of the actions of α2 agonists; for example, the α2B-adrenoceptor subtype mediates the short-term hypertensive response to α2 agonists, whereas the α2A adrenoceptor is responsible for the anesthetic and sympatholytic responses.
