    Therefore, and given that it is essential that the protection of the health and safety of the foetuses or offspring of female workers does not lead to the unfavourable treatment of women on the labour market and that it is without prejudice to Union law concerning equal treatment for men and women, besides setting biological limit values for all workers, this Directive should provide for medical surveillance to be carried out for female workers of childbearing age whose blood lead level exceeds 4,5 μg Pb/100 ml blood or the national reference value of the general population not occupationally exposed to lead and its inorganic compounds, if such a value exists, in order to take account of their specific situation.
