Definition phenomenon where a customer changes their pattern of electricity consumption in response to a stimulus Reference "Council-EN based on:- Home Response: Domestic Demand Side Response Insights Report (27.3.2023), elementenergy, Greater London Authority, March 2022- Directive (EU) 2019/944 on common rules for the internal market for electricity, Article 2 Definitions, point (2) 'demand response'"
Comment The two main demand response mechanisms are in response to market signals:- 'implicit' demand response (price-based), elicited through tariffs and price signals, for example by time-variable pricing to incentivise consumers to move the timing of their consumption;- 'explicit' demand response (incentive-based), elicited through direct payments to consumers to change their consumption, for example in certain demand-side response programmes, where participating customers are rewarded for agreeing to be on standby, and their supplier or operator can 'activate' a demand response by notifying them that they should curtail their consumption at a given time.Another type of demand response is elicited where the acceptance of a customer's bid to sell a demand reduction or increase at a price in an organised market for wholesale energy products, either alone or through aggregation, acts as a stimulus for the customer to change their electricity consumption patterns.Moving the timing of consumption is known as 'demand shifting', while curtailing consumption is known as 'demand shedding'.
