    rise | continental rise
    en
Definition submarine feature which is that part of the continental margin lying between the continental slope and the abyssal plain; it is usually a gentle slope with gradients of ½ degree or less and a generally smooth surface consisting of sediments Reference "The Law of the Sea. Baselines: An examination of the relevant provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (3.2.2021). Office for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea, United Nations, 1989"
Comment Some continental margins consist of three elements - the shelf, the slope and the rise - whereas others show no rise. The continental slope forms a portion of the continental margin and extends from the shelf edge to the top of the rise, or to the top of the deep ocean floor where no rise exists. The rise is normally a wedge-shaped sedimentary body having a smaller gradient than the continental slope.
